Weekend sorted with the family

Masterton

A weekend in Masterton is good to go, and there is fun for everyone.

Whether you are whipping on over from Wellington or making a dash down SH2 from the Manawatu or Hawke’s Bay, Masterton is easy driving.

There are loads of accommodation options; for value and convenience, the Copthorne Solway Park at the southern end of town ticks all the boxes. Oh yeah, there is a decent sized indoor swimming pool and games room to occupy the kids.

Family dining doesn’t get better than The Farriers or Lone Star Masterton, both in the centre of town. With a chokka day ahead of you tomorrow it’s a good idea to fuel up!

Masterton

Masterton is a fantastic base to explore the region from; it’s a 50-minute drive out to Castlepoint Beach where the scenery is spectacular, whatever the weather. On the way call in at Rewanui Forest Reserve and take a walk on one of their loop walks, the Totara Loop walk highlights some very old Totara, Hinau, and Rewarewa trees.

Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre is only 20 minutes north, and sure to have a lasting impression on the kids. For something really special, phone ahead to book a cultural tour, (Te Hīkoi o Pūkaha), which usually start at 11am or 2pm).

Masterton

If you want to keep it close, Masterton has plenty to do, and it all starts in the centre of town at the beautiful Queen Elizabeth Park, an awesome spot for kids. Arguably one of the best children’s playgrounds in the country, there is a miniature train, ($1 a ride), paddle boats, mini-putt; across the road Trust House Recreation Centre pools provide more thrills with its high speed water slide and lazy river. Mum and dad might like a bit of chill time at Aratoi Museum, or have a coffee at Entice Cafe.

From top to bottom, Queen Street in Masterton has great shopping; at the southern you can grab a delicious bite to eat and take in a movie at The Screening Room; while up north, the focus is on tenpin bowling, arcade games and bumper cars at Masterbowl.

All in all, it's a great escape with the family in Masterton!
